Inadequate Vitamin D May Account for Over 1/2 of End-stage Renal Disease in African Americans
In the December 2009 issue of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, researchers report a strong association between end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in African Americans and reduced vitamin D levels. Vitamin D deficiencies are more common in this group compared to Caucasians due to increased skin pigmentation, which results in reduced vitamin D synthesis from sun exposure.
Deficiencies in vitamin D (defined as <15 ng/ml) were found in 34% of African Americans compared to 5% of non-Hispanic Caucasians. Researchers also discovered that individuals with the lowest vitamin D levels were 2.6 times as likely to end up on dialysis compared to those with the highest levels. The researchers determined that vitamin D was responsible for about 58% of the excess risk for renal disease experienced by African Americans.
Follow-up research is needed to confirm the results, but this study adds to previous evidence linking vitamin D deficiency to the progression of kidney disease and the resulting need for dialysis. It also explains a good portion of the increased risk of ESRD in African Americans.

Quercetin Reduces Blood Pressure in Adults with Hypertension
Blood pressure remained unchanged in prehypertensives after supplementation with quercetin. In contrast, stage 1 hypertensive subjects showed significant reductions in both systolic (-7 mm Hg) and diastolic (-2 mm Hg) blood pressure after quercetin supplementation. This is the first published study to show that quercetin supplementation can reduce blood pressure in hypertensive adult humans. Additionally, it is important to note that quercetin supplementation did not influence the blood pressure of non-hypertensive individuals.

Omega–3 Fatty Acid Intake & The Incidence of Age-related Macular Degeneration
Researchers recently investigated whether omega-3 fatty acid intake was associated with a reduced risk of developing both wet and dry forms of AMD. The study involved 1837 people from the Age-Related Eye Diseases Study (AREDS) who were at moderate to high risk of developing AMD. Clinical measurements were obtained in this group over a period of 12 years (from 1992 to 2005).
Participants who reported the highest omega–3 fatty acid intake were 35% less likely than their peers to develop dry (CGA) AMD, and 32% less likely to develop the more common, wet form (NV) AMD.
Over the 12 years of this study, the incidence of CGA and NV AMD was lowest for those reporting the highest consumption of omega-3 fatty acids, which are found primarily in oily fish, nuts and seeds, and fish oil supplements. If these results are applied to the general population, dietary intervention may have a significant preventive effect on the development and progression of AMD.

Daily Supplement Use and Brain Function in Healthy Children
A study published in the November 2008 British Journal of Nutrition examined the effects of multivitamin and multimineral supplements on brain function in children. The study involved 81 healthy children between the ages of 8 and 14. The children were randomly assigned to receive a daily children’s multivitamin and multimineral supplement or a placebo.
During twelve weeks of supplementation, the children were given a series of tests to assess brain function. The children who received daily supplements performed better on two tests of attention than did the children who received placebos. Even more surprising was that the improvements in attention scores were seen within a few hours after administering the first vitamin and mineral dose. Mood, another outcome the authors were researching, was not significantly affected by the supplement.
These results suggest that multivitamin and multimineral supplementation may help to improve brain function in healthy children. However, it is impossible to determine whether the improvement in brain function in the children who took the daily supplement was due to a single ingredient in the supplement or whether it was due to the interaction of multiple vitamins and/or minerals. While additional research will be necessary to further elucidate this point, it may be time to reconsider the role of daily multivitamins in maintaining childhood health.

Vitamin D in the news(again).
About two-thirds of Utahns don't get enough vitamin D, which could increase their risk of depression, diabetes, heart disease and early death.
That's according to research from Intermountain Healthcare, which today at a national conference is presenting three abstracts that bolster the growing link between vitamin D levels and a wide range of health issues.
While the vitamin has long been known to promote calcium absorption and strengthen bones, it has also been increasingly linked to diseases, from heart disease to autoimmune diseases and some cancers.
Using its vast database of electronic medical records, the Heart Institute at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray posed the questions: What effect do vitamin D levels have on the development of cardiovascular disease? On depression among patients with heart disease? On risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as diabetes and hypertension? Read more.

USANA Supported Clinical Study Demonstrates Improved Bone Health in Girls
New Study Involving Active Calcium™ Chewable Offers Promising Results
SALT LAKE CITY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 29, 2009-- USANA Health Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ: USNA) announced today that a third-party clinical study led by Dr. David Greene at Australian Catholic University (ACU National) found that use of USANA’s Active Calcium™ Chewable supplement improves bone health in young girls.
The double-blind, placebo-controlled study involved 20 pairs of identical twin girls, ages 9-12 years old, who were randomly assigned to receive USANA’s Active Calcium Chewable or a matching placebo. The results of the study found that after six months of supplementation, Active Calcium Chewable improved measures of bone mineral content, bone mineral density, and bone strength in these girls.
“We are delighted with the results of the ACU National study,” said Dr. Tim Wood, USANA’s Executive Vice President of Research and Development. “These results confirm the findings of a similar 2003 clinical trial conducted at the University of Utah. The ACU National study design, in which one twin received Active Calcium Chewable while her sister received the placebo, goes a step further and factors out genetic influences.”
Results of the ACU National study are particularly significant, because young women accumulate bone mass most rapidly during adolescence, and ideal skeletal development can only be achieved when dietary intakes of calcium, vitamin D, and magnesium are optimal during this period. Dr. Greene of ACU National said maximizing bone during the growing years was essential to offsetting the effects of osteoporosis in later life.
“It is estimated that only 10 to 25 percent of children and teens get adequate amounts of calcium and vitamin D,” said Dr. Christine Wood. “My own experience as a pediatrician confirms this when I question my patients about their calcium intakes. Parents and teens need to understand the potential long-term risks of chronic calcium and vitamin D deficiency during adolescence. We can’t turn back the clock as these children age into adults.” Dr. Christine Wood is an expert in nutritional medicine for children and speaks on healthy lifestyles to parents worldwide. She is also a member of USANA’s Scientific Advisory Council.

Dietary Zinc Intake Correlates with DNA Strength
A study published in the August 2009 American Journal of Clinical Nutrition examined the effects of varying levels of zinc intake on DNA damage in healthy adult males. Nine healthy men with reported mean daily zinc intakes of 11 mg/day were subjected to three different dietary periods.
- Days 1-13 = baseline period (11 mg zinc/day)
- Days 14-55 = zinc depletion (0.6 mg zinc/day for 1 week, then 4 mg zinc/day for 5 weeks)
- Days 56-83 = zinc repletion (11 mg zinc/day for 4 weeks with 20 mg supplemental zinc for the first 7 days)
Blood samples were collected on days 1, 13, 35, 55, and 83, and three key metrics were analyzed (DNA damage in peripheral blood cells, plasma oxidative stress, and antioxidant defense biomarkers).
As expected, dietary zinc depletion was strongly associated with increased DNA breakage in peripheral blood cells (day 13 compared with day 55, P < p =" 0.006).">
This study provides strong evidence for dietary zinc intake being a critical factor in maintaining DNA integrity in humans.

Vitamin D Deficiencies Widespread Among Pregnant Women & Infants Despite Prenatal Vitamin Usage
More than 80% of African American women and nearly half of Caucasian women tested at delivery had levels of vitamin D that were insufficient, even though more than 90% of them used prenatal vitamins during pregnancy.
In addition, umbilical cord blood from newborns showed 92.4% of African American babies and 66.1% of Caucasian infants had insufficient vitamin D levels at birth, leaving them at risk for rickets and other health problems. A newborn relies completely on its mother for its vitamin D stores.
These results suggest that African American and Caucasian pregnant women and newborns residing in the northern U.S. are at high risk of vitamin D insufficiency, even when mothers regularly take prenatal vitamins. Higher-dose supplementation is needed to improve maternal and infant vitamin D status.

Beta-carotene supplementation long-term may delay mental decline
The researchers tested the general cognition, verbal memory, and category fluency of 5,956 participants, including 4,052 participants from the PHS with a minimum supplementation period of 18 years.
Among the 1,904 newly recruited subjects (average supplementation of 1 year) no differences in cognition were evident whether they took beta-carotene or the placebo.
However, among the long-term supplement users from the PHS, the mean global score (average of all tests) was significantly higher in the beta carotene group than in the placebo. On verbal memory, men receiving long-term beta carotene supplementation also performed significantly better than the placebo group. The potential mechanism for the protective effects could be related to the role of vitamin A and beta-carotene on beta-amyloid protein production in the brain. The build-up of plaque from beta-amyloid deposits is associated with oxidative stress, cell death, and increased risk of Alzheimer's disease.
The study is the first to look at long-term antioxidant supplementation in relation to a decline in cognitive function that occurs naturally with age, and that precedes diseases such as Alzheimer's.

Prenatal multivitamin supplementation decreases low birth weight risk
| An inadequate intake of micronutrients during pregnancy increases the possibility of nutritional deficiencies that can affect the normal growth of the baby. Low birth weight is often associated with increased infant mortality. A new meta-analysis published online on June 9, 2009 in the Canadian Medical Association Journal showed that pregnant women that supplemented with multinutrient formulas experienced a reduced risk of giving birth to low birth weight babies compared with the risk experienced by women who did not receive the extra nutrients. Researchers identified 13 trials that compared the effects of a multivitamin supplement with a placebo, or with iron and folic acid, which are currently recommended for pregnant women by the World Health Organization. Multivitamin supplements evaluated in the trials included a combination of vitamins A, B1, B6, and folic acid, and the minerals zinc, iron, and copper. Compared to those receiving a placebo, women who supplemented with multivitamins had a 19 percent lower risk of delivering a low birth weight infant. The multivitamin group also had a 17 percent lower risk than those who received only the standard iron and folic acid supplements. The risk of preterm birth and the risk of delivering infants who were small for their gestational age were approximately the same among treatment and control groups. Prenatal multivitamin supplementation was associated with a significantly reduced risk of low birth weight when compared with iron-folic acid supplementation alone. CMAJ. 6/2009; 180(12). | |

Multivitamin use in adult women is associated with telomere length
Telomeres are found at the end of a chromosome and are required for replication and stability. It is thought that telomere length may be a marker of biological aging. Multivitamin supplements represent a major source of micronutrients, which may affect telomere length by modulating oxidative stress and chronic inflammation.
Recent research has sought to examine whether multivitamin use is associated with longer telomeres in women. Scientists performed an analysis of data from 586 early participants (ages 35–74 years) in the Sister Study. Multivitamin use and nutrient intakes were evaluated with a 146-item food frequency questionnaire, and relative telomere length of the participant’s DNA was measured.
After age and other potential factors were adjusted, multivitamin use was associated with longer telomeres. The relative telomere length of DNA was on average 5.1% longer among daily multivitamin users, compared to nonusers. In the analysis of micronutrients, higher intakes of vitamins C and E from foods were each associated with longer telomeres, even after adjustment for multivitamin use. In addition, intakes of both nutrients were related to telomere length among women who did not take multivitamins.
This study provides the first epidemiologic evidence that multivitamin use is associated with longer telomere length among women, and could possibly relate to a decrease in biological aging.

Smarter Child with Multi-vitamins & minerals Supplementation
A recent UK-based study investigated whether daily supplementation with vitamins/minerals could modulate cognitive performance and mood in healthy children. In this investigation, eighty-one healthy children aged from 8 to 14 years underwent laboratory assessments of their cognitive performance and mood on the first and last days of 12 weeks' supplementation with a commercially available vitamins/mineral product. The assesment was done at pre-dose, 1h and 3h post-dose. Interim assessments were also completed at home after 4 and 8 weeks at 3 h post-dose. Each assessment comprised completion of a cognitive battery, which included tasks assessing mood and the speed and accuracy of attention and aspects of memory (secondary, semantic and spatial working memory).
The vitamin/mineral group performed more accurately on two attention tasks: 'Arrows' choice reaction time task at 4 and 8 weeks; and 'Arrow Flankers' choice reaction time task at 4, 8 and 12 weeks. Picture Recognition errors showed significant decrement at 12 weeks.
While mood was not modulated in any interpretable manner, the author believe that these results suggest that vitamin/mineral supplementation has the potential to improve brain function in healthy children, and warrant further investigation.

Children's Hunger Fund to Name New Malawi Medical Centre after USANA Founder
CHF President Dave Phillips made the announcement Sunday at his organization’s annual Children’s Champion Awards banquet. “Dr. Wentz has been a strong advocate for CHF and has had a major influence on bettering the lives of children around the world. I cannot think of a better way to honor Dr. Wentz’s hard work than to name our newest medical center after him. This facility in Malawi will stand as a tribute to his legacy of improving health and alleviating suffering.”
USANA distributors and employees, including CEO Dave Wentz, donated nearly $40,000 for the tribute to Dr. Wentz, who learned of the surprise honor at the CHF banquet. According to CHF, the Wentz Medical Centre in Malawi will provide the country’s poorest population with preventative and diagnostic treatment, as well as a maternity ward with extensive prenatal and postnatal programs. Two additional Wentz Medical Centres, in Uganda and Cambodia, were personally funded by Dr. Wentz and already have treated thousands of underprivileged families.
“To have the new medical center in Malawi named after me is a true honor,” Dr. Wentz said. “This facility will provide necessary medical care to thousands and will help ease the suffering of this impoverished region. CHF has done outstanding work in an effort to better the lives of those around the world, and I am proud to be associated with such a reputable organization.”
USANA began its long-standing partnership with CHF eight years ago. In that time, USANA and CHF have worked together to alleviate hunger and give thousands of children around the world daily nourishment and medical care. According to the CDC, as of April 18, approximately 498,798 people have died from chronic disease this year.
We visited the Center for Disease Control's Website today and would like to share this information about Chronic Diseases.
Chronic diseases—such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes—are the leading causes of death and disability in the United States. Chronic diseases account for 70% of all deaths in the U.S., which is 1.7 million each year. These diseases also cause major limitations in daily living for almost 1 out of 10 Americans or about 25 million people. Although chronic diseases are among the most common and costly health problems, they are also among the most preventable. Adopting healthy behaviors such as eating nutritious foods, being physically active, and avoiding tobacco use can prevent or control the devastating effects of these diseases.
Dr Ray Strand, a specialist in nutritional and preventive medicine recommends Nutritional Supplementation as an additional way help prevent and says,
"Every man, woman, and child needs to be supplementing a healthy diet and be involved in a modest exercise program. This is the key to protecting and maintaining your health."Please visit our website to learn more about nutritional supplementation with USANA Products.
