Sharing, retweeting, and posting our way to better health.

The explosion of social network websites over the last few years have helped people reconnect with friends and family from the past, write Blogs, align with fellow common themed people, promote a business, share humorous or uplifting videos, or as many people that are in the same industry as me often do, and that is share news about health and wellness.

It is common for people in the same company to share health news from their company or promoting some of the products. It is not so common to share news that others provide on either Facebook, Twitter, Blogs, Linkedin or other source that does not benefit them.

When I thought of the idea for this Blog Post I wanted to include many different many diffferent posts but as time passed it was a bit harder to recall everything I wanted to include. If we are truely genuine in promoting better health than we should not be afraid to share what others are sharing with all of their friends and followers.

Here are a couple samples.

Diabetes is stealing years away

Do you ever feel like once you reach a certain age that you begin to age more quickly? Many of us will attempt do what we can to turn back the clock. The latest newsletter from Dr. Strand says that younger people are being diagnosed with Diabetes and how it shortnes their lifespan. Dr Strand says," Now we are beginning to realize that when our patients even become pre-diabetic, that they begin to age about a third faster thanthey should. So for every third birthday, they can simply add another year of life. The
longer you live with pre-diabetes and diabetes the shorter your life expectancy."

USANA- Raising the bar once again

You probably know of people that go above and beyond what is considered good enough or acceptable by most people. Being extraordinary while others are content with being ordinary is rare but it is always great to see when people or even companies rise up and set the bar higher for others see if they can rise up to the new standards.

USANA Health Sciences has received a " Drug Establishment Registration" by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration. What that means is they are now certified to manufacture OTC or over the counter drugs. This is the next step for a company that already follow Good Manufacturing Practices which is not required by any company that primarily sells nutritional supplements.
Here is the press release.

USANA Health Sciences, Inc. One friend was recently chosen to be the Spokesperson for Active Aging for Fitball. When it comes to your choices in your life, especially your health, it is better to be proactive than reactive.

Dr Strand began as a Family Practice Doctor and eventually became an expert in the field of Nutrition. One of his recent newsletters is titled Becoming Proactive in Protecting Your Health.

Quality begins in house

It seems like only yesterday, actually it was yesterday that our Blog shared information about USANA passing the high testing standards of Consumer Labs. This was about the label of the Nutrtional Supplements matching what was inside the bottle.

Today the What's up? USANA Blog talks about the in house manufacturing quality standards that USANA uses to be in control of the manufacturing process. Why, when it would be easier and cheaper to cut corners? A USANA Scientist replied when asked by a competitor at a trade show"
The thing is, we care. And we believe our customers care, too. It goes without saying that they deserve the best we have to offer. We all deserve to know our health is valued. Every product we manufacture represents a promise — whether to an average person like you and me or to an Olympic athlete training for gold.
And when you have so many people relying on you to deliver the highest quality nutritional supplements, you do everything in your power to deliver on your promises." ...Read more.

Multivitamin labels and whats inside

The last few years many people that are looking to improve their health are looking at labels of multivitamins when they go to the grocery store, drug store, or even a big box store. They often will base the decision to buy or not to buy on what the labels say on them.
The labels are not always correct. The labels on multivitamins came up again this week when Consumer Labs released  a report that states many products labels do not match the ingredients inside...Read more at MSNBC.com

Avoiding food mistakes with advice from Dr. Karen Wolfe

Everyday many people are looking at the food choices they are making and finding ways to make better ones. There are several ways that food manufacturers and restaurants are helping by listing the nutritional value on packages and menus. What if you think you are making a healthy choice for a meal but find out later it wasn't as healthy as you thought?

Ever since we joined USANA, I have had the chance to meet many great Doctors that focus more on  maintaining wellness than treating a disease Dr. Karen Wolfe in one of those Doctors. Recently I had the privilege of introducing Dr. Wolfe at an event here in Orange County. She teaches of a balance with body, mind, and spirit.
There are three  Blogs written by Dr. Karen Wolfe this week about  avoiding sugar in foods, not getting enough fat, & tossing egg yolks and eating only the egg whites.

Lowering BPA exposure

It has only been a little over a month since the Healthy Home book was released. It offers simple solutions to modern conveniences that could be affecting our health. There are now stories showing up in the news that discuss issues addressed in the book. In the book it speaks about using other containers such as glass or stainless steel to store food and to avoid storing in certain plastics. mainly Styrofoam.

A few days ago I came across an article about lowering BPA exposure. The article states that BPA is a toxic, ubiquitous industrial chemical used for decades to harden plastic. It is commonly used in shatterproof polycarbonate plastic food and beverage containers, lids of glass jars, epoxy lining in metal cans and dental sealants. Research has shown BPA can leach out of the plastic and into food and can be harmful even at low doses.

Several families were tested for BPA levels at the beginning of the study. During the study the family removed all packaged foods from their diet. BPA levels were reduced at the end of the study. Once they began to use packaged foods again the levels went back up.

Mercury fillings and the toxic cloud in your mouth

Last night we saw Dr. Wentz and Dave Wentz on the Healthy Home Book Tour in Long Beach. They discussed several points that are mentioned in the new book. They made a demonstration showing mercury fillings in teeth. Just the simple action of brushing your teeth can release mercury to where it reads at a toxic level even though the FDA says that mercury fillings that are sealed can't release toxins into your mouth..

Hearing that I looked through some old Blog posts and the information below was provided by Dr. Wentz back in 2008. Now is a good time to revisit some of the highlights of Dr. Wentz said before.
"The use of mercury amalgams in dental fillings continues, despite a steady decline due to public awareness. After years of negotiations and stalling, the FDA has now been forced to agree that mercury amalgams should not be used in pregnant women and children. It’s an important step toward eliminating mercury use from all medical practice."

Dr. Wentz previously wrote  A Mouthful of Poison and he says, " Mercury is a poison, and it has no place in the mouths of humans (or animals, for that matter). Yet the professional dental community and government health authorities have steadfastly denied that any harm is done by using mercury in dental fillings, despite a wealth of evidence to the contrary, as I made clear in my book A Mouth Full of Poison."

You might need 8 to 10 times the U.S. RDA of Vitamin D to reduce cancer risk

It's amazing that with all the studies showing the effectiveness of Vitamin D in our overall health that many people still have a Vitamin D defeciency. The U.S. RDA is so far behind the curve that it could take years for the levels to be raised. It is now recommended that every adult take 4000-8000 IU daily while the U.S. RDA remains at 800 IU. The RDA has doubled since it was found that 400 IU prevents rickets in the 20th century..

Vitamin D has been found to reduce the risk of type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and several types of cancer, and not to mention how it builds our immune system.. It is important to raise the amount of Vitamin D levels in our blood. The article below from Science daily.com explains more about reducing cancer risk.

Markedly higher vitamin D intake needed to reduce cancer risk, researchers say

Getting enough fiber to become healthier

We often hear about getting enough fiber in our diet and think that I will worry about that when I get old. Did you ever think that if you don't get enough fiber that you will get you old quicker?
Fiber is very important and Americans seem to almost avoid fiber and then suffer from it. It is recommended to take in about 35 grams of fiber a day while the average person only consumes 8-10 grams a day. Fiber is important for our health which often is tied to the health of our digestive system.
Dr. Strand recently wrote about The importance of fiber in our Diet in a recent newsletter. Some things like constipation, diverticular disease, lowering of cholesterol, and reducing the risk of cancer can be avoided by increasing our daily fiber intake.
The news bgins with; Dr. Dennis Burkitt, a Christian surgeon, was a missionary in Africa for over 20 years. During this time he made some amazing observations and discoveries and even had a disease named after him—Burkitt’s Lymphoma. One of the interesting stories he would tell was how he did not allow his residents to make the diagnosis of appendicitis in native Africans unless the patient spoke English. He had learned that the native Africans just didn’t get appendicitis...Learn more about The importance of fiber in our diet.

Fiber is found in whole fruits, vegetables, and grains. There is very little fiber in meats, dairy products and many of the processed foods we often eat. USANA has deveolped Fibergy Plus which contains 12 grams of dietary fiber.

Our digestive health begins in our mouth with the foods we eat and then we rely on several internal organs to complete the process. Learn more about the science behind USANA Fibergy Plus.

During Pregnancy, Low–Glycemic Diets Improve Health Outcomes in Obese Women & Their Infants

Excess body weight is known to complicate pregnancies, but the optimal diet during pregnancy is currently unknown. New research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition aimed to examine the effects of a low–glycemic load (low-GL) diet in overweight and obese pregnant women.

Researchers randomly assigned 46 overweight or obese pregnant women to receive a low-GL or a low-fat diet. The women received carbohydrate-rich foods, fats, and snack foods through home delivery or study visits. Birth weight, infant body measurements, gestational duration, maternal weight gain, and maternal metabolic parameters were measured.

No significant differences in birth weight or measures of infant body fat were seen between the two groups. However, in the low-GL compared with the low-fat group, gestational duration was significantly longer and fewer deliveries occurred at less than 38.0 weeks (13% versus 48%). Adjusted head circumference was greater in the low-GL versus the low-fat group. Women in the low-GL group had smaller increases in triglycerides and total cholesterol and a greater decrease in C-reactive protein (a marker of inflammation).

In this study, a low-GL diet correlated with longer pregnancy duration, greater infant head circumference, and improved maternal cardiovascular risk factors. Researchers suggest that large-scale studies may be useful in determining whether a low-GL diet may be beneficial in the prevention of prematurity and other unfavorable maternal and infant outcomes.

Is Diabetes in your future?

You probably don't have to go to far within your family or circle of friends to find someone with Diabetes. In our family my Mom was diagnosed with it over thirty years ago. We watched her suffer with it as the complications increased during the last years of her life. Sonia's Mom also was diagnosed with Diabetes a few years ago and is starting to experience the complications. We also have Nieces and Nephews that are dealing with Diabetes as children.

When my Mom passed away in 2006, I started to become concerned about our health. In fact, that is one of the main reasons I started taking USANA Supplements. First to improve Sonia's and my health, then to keep our Children healthy, and then to educate family and friends.

Our own education about Diabetes continues to grow. We have friends that have made positive changes to their life through diet, exercise, and supplementation that are seeing improvements in their blood sugar and overall health. We also know people that continue to lose the quality of life they once knew as the disease takes it's eventual toll. Diabetes will never go away but you can delay the effects that it will cause to your health. We urge you to make a maximum effort to understand Diabetes and the ways you can live without insulin. You should always check with you own Doctor before you eliminate or reduce insulin.

We keep hearing about 1 in 3 babies born after 2000 will have Diabetes and it increases to 1 in 2 for Hispanic and African Americans. Recently news came out about 1 in 3 American having Diabetes by 2050.

Dr. Ray Strand  has studied about Nutrition since the 1990's and has written and spoken about Diabetes and the years of insulin resistance that builds in our bodies before we are ever diagnosed with Diabetes. You don't just wake up one morning and have Diabetes.

He recently wrote about Diabetes being a choice. He begins with "One of the greatest challenges to our health care system is the dramatic rise in the incidence of both obesity and diabetes. In the U.S. and Canada, diabetes has increased more than 500% during just the last generation. More than seventy percent of adults and more than thirty percent of our children are considered to be either overweight or obese. In spite of spending more than 30 billion dollars each year on diets and weight loss programs, the rate of obesity has tripled in this country in the past thirty years. Even more alarming is the fact that the Center for Disease Control (CDC) has projected that one-third of our children born after the year 2000 will become diabetic." Read more from Dr. Strand.

Vitamin E could add years to you life

Vitamin E may increase the life expectancy of males who have high dietary vitamin C intake and smoke less than a pack per day

ScienceDaily (2011-01-20) -- Depending on the level of smoking and dietary vitamin C intake, vitamin E supplementation may extend the life-span of restricted groups of men, according to a new study. Several large randomized trials of humans found that vitamin E supplementation does not reduce mortality. Stress level higher in families of deployed Military

The sacrifice of men and women that serve in the military is not difficult for many to acknowledge. The challenges faced by their families sometimes goes unoticed.

A recent study by the Rand Corp describes states that children suffer from stress and anxiety as they take on additional chores in the house. Spouses also face additoanl stress with the changes in parental responsibilities and the heavier workload.

It is more important than ever for good solid communication within the families while the family member is deployed. Anita Chandra of Rand says"These findings underscore the experiences of children and spouses when a member of the military goes off to war. While children and spouses are continuing to handle challenges well overall, it is how children and spouses handle the change in household and family relationships that affects how they cope during periods of deployment."

Statins- Often prescribed but benefits can be in question

It seems that everywhere we turn there are commercials for Statin Drugs to lower Cholesterol and to fight other diseases or syndromes that people face. There are several household brands and often the list of side effects appear to be worse than whatever condition you may have.
The experts constantly tell everyone that Cholesterol is the leading cause of heart disease and that the LDL Cholesterol is bad and that Statins are the best way to lower your cholesterol and improve your health. A recent study that appears in Science Daily.com suggests something different. The report says that there is not enough evidence to recommend the widespread use of statins in people with no previous history of heart disease, according to a new Cochrane Systematic Review. Researchers say statins should be prescribed with caution in those at low risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD).
It is important to educate people about improving their diet, exercise, and to stop smoking to help prevent heart disease. The people involved in the research are still uncertain of the best way to prevent Cardiovascular Disease.

A possible dangerous side effect of weight loss- Pollutants in the Bloodstream.

We are almost three weeks into 2011 and many people are looking to make this a year for successfully losing some pounds and not finding them again along with some of their friends. We wish you continued success and also offer some words of caution. There could be pollutants stored in the bloodstream and can be released when weight is lost.

A article in AOL states researchers have discovered that chemicals and pollutants may be stored in our body fat, and when significant amounts of body fat are broken down, as they are during weight loss, these harmful substances could be released into the bloodstream and may cause disease.

Dr. Myron Wentz(the founder of USANA Health Sciences) was recently quoted in an article for AOLhealth and said, "Pollutants are rapidly increasing in our home and work environments, in the air, water and products we are exposed to every day." He also added, "Another source of exposure is through our consumption of meat, dairy and seafood, as these same pollutants accumulate in livestock and fatty fish."
